Bali SIM for 3 Months: The 90-Day IMEI Rule (2026)
Share
If you need a Bali SIM for 3 months, you must follow the "3-3-90" rule. You will need to purchase three separate SIM cards (one per month), which in total is 90 days.
Staying longer than 3 months requires either paying a high customs fee (up to 33% of your phone's value) or buying the cheapest local phone under USD 100.

Understanding Your Bali SIM for 3 Months
Many travelers look for a Bali SIM for 3 months to cover an extended holiday or digital nomad stay. However, Indonesian law prevents a single tourist number from lasting that long due to strict 30-day tourist SIM cycles and IMEI regulations.
When you purchase a Bali SIM for 3 months, you are actually buying a series of three separate 30-day plans.
Staying 3 months (Up to 90 Days)
If your trip is exactly 3 months or less, you can avoid the heavy import taxes. However, you must accept that your phone number will change.
The 3-SIM Rule: Because Indonesian tourist prepaid SIMs (like Telkomsel, XLSmart, Indosat) are hard-coded for 30 days, you must buy three separate SIMs (one per month).
The Number Change: Each tourist SIM comes with a fresh number. You cannot extend the validity of the first number.
The Process: Use your first 30-day window, then swap to a new SIM. You can repeat this until you hit the 90-day IMEI limit.

Staying 3+ Months
Once your phone has been active on Indonesian networks for 90 days, the government's CEIR system will block your IMEI. You cannot simply buy another Bali SIM for 3 months to fix the signal.
To keep using your phone, you have two choices:
Paying the "IMEI fee" customs
To keep using your current phone after 90 days, you must pay an customs fee to the Indonesian government. For most travelers, this tax is more expensive than the phone is worth. We don’t recommend it.
Cost: This is often 30% to 40% of the phone's value (minus a $500 exemption if registered at the airport).
The $500 Exemption: Every traveler is allowed a $500 USD tax-free allowance for personal goods (including your phone). You only pay tax on the amount over this $500.
-
Example: If you bring an iPhone 16 Pro valued at $1,100 USD:
Taxable Amount: $1,100 - $500 (Exemption) = $600 USD
-
Total Tax (approximately 27-33%): $600 x 32.1% = $192.60 USD
Import Duty: 10% × 600 = $60 USD
VAT: 11% × (600 + 60) = $72.60 USD
Income Tax (without NPWP): 10% × 600 = $60 USD
Tax Breakdown:
Import Duty (Bea Masuk) = 10%
Value Added Tax (VAT/PPN) = 11%
Income Tax (PPh) = 10% (if you do not have an Indonesian tax ID/NPWP).
Note: If you have an NPWP, the Income Tax drops to 5%
Buying the cheapest local phone as a hotspot / Wi-Fi
This is the most cost-effective way to continue using a Bali SIM for 3 months or longer without the tax headache. It is a popular strategy for long-term travelers and digital nomads. Since the phone is purchased locally, the IMEI is already registered permanently. You can use it as a hotspot for your "home" phone.
Strategy: Instead of paying a $400 USD tax on your home phone, spend under $100 USD on the cheapest local Indonesian phone. The local phone will be a permanent mobile hotspot for your expensive home phone.
Permanent Local Number: Once you have a local phone, you can simply buy one local phone number that can be used forever. Unlike the 30-day tourist SIMs, a standard local SIM on a local phone doesn't expire every month; you just need to buy a monthly data plan.
Local Tip: Buy your phone at Diamond Handphone. Their knowledgeable, English-speaking staff will guide you clearly and honestly. They’ve got a complete range of Apple and Android phones, so you can usually find what you need in one place.
The "3-3-90" Rule for Bali
To keep things simple, Balitel teaches every customer the "3-3-90" rule.
-
3 Months:You must buy 3 separate SIMs. You cannot keep one number for 90 days.
Month 1: Use your first Bali SIM for 3 months (Number A).
Month 2: Swap to the next Bali SIM for 3 months (Number B).
Month 3: Final Bali SIM for 3 months (Number C).
Day 91+: Transition from a Bali SIM for 3 months strategy to a local phone strategy.
- 3 Numbers: Each 30-day SIM provides a new phone number.
- 90 Days:This is the hard IMEI limit. On Day 91, your non-Indonesian phone is blocked.
To stay connected after Day 90, you must either pay the official import tax (approximately 40%) or buy a local Indonesian phone (under USD 100) to use as a permanent hotspot.
