Do You Need an Indonesian Number for Gojek? (2026)

Short answer: To be safe, yes. Gojek lets you sign up with a foreign phone number, and some travellers get the sign-up code with no trouble. Many others wait and the code never arrives. An Indonesian number is the only way to be sure, and it also fixes three other problems a foreign number cannot.

How signing up for Gojek works

You install Gojek and type in your phone number. Gojek sends a text message with a short code of four to six digits. You type that code into the app, and your account is ready. This code is called an OTP, which just means "one-time password".

Gojek lets you choose a foreign country code. That is why some websites say you do not need an Indonesian number.

Why the code often does not arrive

Signing up for Gojek and Grab is the most common reason travellers come to us for a local number. A common story: they typed in their home number, waited, and the code never came.

It can fail for different reasons:

  • Roaming is switched off. Most people turn it off when they land to avoid charges. Then the phone cannot receive the text.
  • Your home carrier blocks or delays it. Some carriers do not pass on texts from abroad reliably.
  • The text simply does not come through. It happens even when everything looks right.

You cannot tell in advance which group you will be in. And the worst time to find out is at the airport, tired, needing a ride.

With an Indonesian number, the Gojek code is just a normal local text.

When to sign up

Sign up for Gojek when you land in Indonesia. We switch on your Indonesian line on your arrival day, so you open Gojek, type your +62 number, and the code arrives as a normal text.

Three things a foreign number cannot do well

1. Top up GoPay

GoPay is the wallet inside Gojek. Topping it up normally needs an Indonesian mobile number. Without GoPay you mostly pay drivers in cash.

2. Pay by QRIS

QRIS is Indonesia's national QR payment code. You see it at warungs, cafes, markets and parking. You pay it through an Indonesian wallet such as GoPay, so a foreign number usually shuts you out.

3. Take calls from your driver

Gojek drivers in Bali call a lot, because villas and small lanes are hard to find. If your account has a foreign number, the driver has to make an international call. It often does not connect, and many drivers give up and cancel.

Side by side

Foreign number Indonesian number
Receive the Gojek sign-up code Sometimes Yes
Top up GoPay Usually no Yes
Pay by QRIS Usually no Yes
Driver calls you International call, often fails Normal local call

One rule to know before you buy: IMEI registration

If you get an Indonesian number, your phone must be registered with the Indonesian government. This is called IMEI registration. The IMEI is the serial number built into your phone.

Indonesia only lets a phone use an Indonesian SIM or eSIM once its IMEI is registered. A tourist registration lasts as long as your plan, 30, 60 or 90 days, and cannot be extended. The registration follows the phone, not the number. A new Indonesian SIM or eSIM needs a new registration, and Telkomsel allows only two tourist registrations in any 12 months.

Registration is free for ordinary phones and needs your passport details. That is a government rule, not a shop rule. A good seller does it for you. Ask any seller what they do with your passport data afterwards. Balitel deletes it 30 days after your line is activated.

Travel eSIMs such as Airalo, Holafly or Saily skip this rule, because they do not give you an Indonesian line. That is also why they cannot give you an Indonesian number. Full guide: IMEI registration in Bali and Indonesia.

What Balitel does

Balitel is an official Telkomsel reseller based in Bali. We sell a local Indonesian line delivered as an eSIM: a real +62 number, not a data-only travel plan.

  • Your number can receive Indonesian text messages, including sign-up codes, and it includes local calls.
  • We complete the government IMEI registration for you. No queue at customs.
  • We need your passport details to do it, and we delete them 30 days after activation.
  • Activation usually takes about 10 minutes. Our team is on WhatsApp from 08:00 to 02:00 Bali time, which covers the first flight into Bali to the last.
  • Your eSIM QR code arrives by WhatsApp, with email as a backup.
  • You can buy before you fly. We schedule activation for your arrival date.

Common questions

Can I use Gojek with my home country number?

Sometimes. Gojek lets you type in a foreign number, and some travellers receive the sign-up code. Many do not, and they find out at the airport when they need a ride. To be safe, sign up with an Indonesian number.

Why didn't my Gojek code arrive?

The code is sent by text message. On a foreign number it can fail because roaming is switched off, because your home carrier blocks or delays texts from abroad, or because the text simply never comes through. An Indonesian number receives it as a normal local text.

Can I top up GoPay with a foreign number?

Usually not. GoPay is the wallet inside Gojek, and topping it up normally needs an Indonesian mobile number. Without it you mostly pay drivers in cash.

Do I have to change my WhatsApp number?

No. WhatsApp stays on the number you registered it with. An Indonesian eSIM is added as a second line, so you keep your home number for WhatsApp and use the Indonesian number for Gojek and local calls.

Will my phone stop working in Indonesia?

Only your Indonesian line, and only when its IMEI registration ends. A tourist registration lasts as long as your plan, 30, 60 or 90 days, and cannot be extended. The registration follows the phone, not the SIM. A new SIM needs a new registration, and Telkomsel allows only two tourist registrations in any 12 months. Wi-Fi and your home SIM on roaming keep working. Registration is free, needs your passport, and a good seller does it for you.

Can I set this up before I arrive in Bali?

Yes. Buy before you fly and the activation is scheduled for your arrival date, so your Indonesian number is ready for the Gojek code when you land.
